Extension of stay
Foreigners whose period of stay is to soon expire may file an application for the extension of stay in various ways depending on the status and purpose of stay.
You can apply for an extension of stay starting from four months before the expiration date of the current period of stay. Necessary documents for submission may vary depending on the status of your stay.
Permission for extension of stay for a registered foreigner
A registered foreigner may file an application to extend his/her period of stay before the expiration of the permitted period of stay.
In the case of a registered foreign minor (less than 17 years old), the application must be filed by the applicant's legal guardian/representative.

Permission for an extension of stay for a registered alien scheduled to depart
When a registered alien who has completed his/her stay intends to stay in the Republic of Korea for an additional period for domestic travel or other purposes, he/she may file an application for an extension of stay of up to 30 days.

Application for the extension of stay for foreign students and foreign language trainees by relevant institutions
An application for the extension of stay for foreign students and foreign language trainees may be filed by the person in charge of the foreign student information system at each university.

Basic documents (exempt when the required information pertaining to the foreign student/foreign language trainee from the university register has already been input into the foreign student information system)- Documents evidencing the student’s enrollment (research): proof of enrollment, exchange student certificate, research student certificate, etc.

Application for extension of stay for overseas Koreans who have reported their place of residence
Overseas Koreans with foreign nationality who are in the Republic of Korea (F-4 holders) may, before the expiration of their period of stay, visit the competent immigration service and file an application for an extension of stay.
If the applicant is less than 17 years in age, the parent/guardian of the applicant must file the application on the applicant’s behalf.
